Since the 1970's, one of the major womens health issues has been the rise in obesity, to a rate of 36 percent. This rate is particularly high among African American (52.3 percent) and Mexican-American women (50.1 percent).

Important new discoveries about the genetic basis of many forms of breast cancer, the second leading cause of death among women, hold great promise in the treatment of this devastating disease. The discovery of BRCA1 and BRCA2, the genes that cause inherited forms of breast cancer, ranks among the greatest scientific breakthroughs in the war on cancer.

Although lung cancer kills more women each year than breast cancer, there are more new cases of breast cancer every year than lung cancer. The estimated lifetime probability of getting breast cancer for women is now 1 in 8, compared to the lifetime risk of getting lung cancer of 1 in 17.

Since 1987, more women have died each year of lung cancer than breast cancer.

Arthritis is reported as one the most common and disabling womens health issues. Women aged 15 years and older account for 60% of arthritis cases. At least 26.4 million women have arthritis, the leading chronic condition among women, and by the year 2020, an estimated 36 million women will be affected.

Osteoporosis is one of the major womens health issues affecting more than 28 million Americans. In the U.S. today, 10 million individuals already have the disease and 18 million more have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis. 80% of those affected by osteoporosis are women.
